The Cribs Are Back! (Ikea)

November 26, 2011

In June, Ikea pulled all their cribs from their stores following a change in the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s regulations. (They said it was precautionary, not because there was a known issue with any of their products.) It was a sad day. The crib is one of the 100% must-haves for a new baby and, between you and me, you don’t need to spend a fortune getting one of the ones that costs more than your first car did. Really, you don’t. You think you do because some of them are gorgeous and it’s your first baby and he’ll sleep in it for a couple of years and so on and so on. If you have the budget and the yearning need, sure, yes, start him off in a beautiful people crib, but hand to God, the Ikea Gulliver for $99.99 is, so far for us, just as sturdy and safe and pretty and white as the much more expensive cribs, one of which we bought in an infant size for our tiny apartment before we moved, so I know whereof I speak.

If you’re still on the hunt for the perfect nest for your new little one, give Ikea a try. Really. Welcome back, cribs!

Note: I have no idea what Ikea’s crib mattresses are like. I bought a well-reviewed Sealy in hopes it would cure our Amazing No-Sleeping Baby. (She did start sleeping better after our move, but I’ve no idea if that was because of the new mattress, the new crib or the new house. If your baby doesn’t sleep, I’d start with the mattress not the house to keep costs down!!)
